Welcome

Welcome to the blog. This is a place where I share some of my lessons. Each post contains a handout and some notes about why I put it together. There is also some further reading included in the footnotes. I hope you find it useful.

Citylife

This lesson is a class about moving to the big city. I teach in Yangon and every class has a mix of ethnicities and cultural backgrounds, mostly because of urban migration. I’ve had some fun teaching this class which looks at some of the personal and political issues surrounding the topic. I know that sounds really boring but trust me it isn’t and there is even a song by John Denver.

Call my bluff

It’s took me a little longer to write than expected but here is a fun game that can be used to teach relative clauses or as a Friday afternoon filler. Call my Bluff is an old classic but I find that often there isn’t enough support for lower level classes. This lesson includes an example activity for how the activity can be used with pre-intermediate students.

Reported speech

This is the first of a regular series of posts where I am going to share a lesson plan and the materials. First up is reported speech. It’s not something I usually enjoy teaching but I made a special effort with these materials and it actually turned out pretty well. The lesson uses cartoons to give learners fun practice of what can sometimes be a boring grammar item.
